Show Me the Way by A.L. Jackson
I’m disappointed to put this one in my DNF category. Originally this book landed on my “Want To Read” list back in March of last year. I’m not sure why, but time and time again I passed it up for something else. Finally 2 days ago I decided to take the plunge.
So why the DNF at 32% complete? First, there’s instalove/lust that isn’t my favorite but I was willing to look past it. Secondly the portrayal of Rex’s 4 year old daughter isn’t accurate. Yes, children can be absolutely adorable at times but not all the time. They are human and will have bad days and good days. It’s a pet peeve of mine when authors portray kids as angelic/in-human creatures. Plus her lisp/speech was grating on my nerves. Also, it’s mentioned that Rynna’s grandmother was in financial trouble with both her business and house. The closure of her restaurant coincides with her passing but also her financial troubles? If her business was so popular why the financial problems? Did she die the instant the business closed or did the failing business close because she passed away? Worst of all… when Rynna is cleaning out the restaurant kitchen it mentions she’s wiping up 30 years worth of grease and grime from the equipment. (Yes, it was also dusty but that can be explained away with being closed for 2 months.) Was her grandma running a dirty diner? Gross.
