BOOK REVIEW- I am the Wild by Karpov Kinrade

I Am the Wild (The Night Firm #1)

I Am the Wild by Karpov Kinrade

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Recently had the wonderful opportunity to meet the lovely authors behind this book. I’m a huge fan of their other series- Vampire Girl. During our conversation, Lux asked me if I had read I Am The Wild– which I had not yet had the pleasure. Fast forward a week and I’m basking in my post book consumption glow.

This book starts out with an odd job advertisement that Eve oddly feels drawn to. (Ladies, in real life I HIGHLY discourage you from taking a newspaper offered by a transient and going to a job interview with no description. That’s how you end up dead in a dumpster.) Alas, this is paranormal awesomeness so Eve ends up with an AMAZING job offer instead of what would happen to us normal folks.

At this point I would be remiss if I didn’t introduce you to the Night brothers. All smoking hot, mysterious, and successful lawyers. Sebastian is the first brother to be introduced and in the story and therefore I felt drawn to his character compared to the other 3.

I don’t want to share too much and accidentally rob you of discovering the characters and surprises yourself. There were a few “what the heck” surprises including one MAJOR (yes, I had to type that in all caps to emphasize) plot twist at the end. Actually, perhaps it’s more of a cliff hanger? I’m not sure which is the appropriate term but when you read it you’ll know what I’m referring to.

While I love the authors and this book I wanted to share two thoughts. They are very, very minor complaints and perhaps once you read the book you’ll disagree with me. First, I felt like there was a bunch of name dropping that wasn’t necessary. For example, Count Dracula and Albert Einstein. I didn’t feel they were necessary and in the case of Count Dracula I would have enjoyed a new character verses relying on the mystic and myths that accompany Dracula’s persona. Second complaint- part of vampire lore that I enjoy the most is the mystery, secrecy, and cunning abilities vampires have crafted over centuries of experiences. Within a few days of being hired Eve is welcomed into the Night brother’s home and most important business affairs. It would have been more realistic had they kept some separation. In regards to the cunning abilities it’s Eve who “saves the day” with her higher level thinking. Where were the intelligent, highly successful vampires who have been attorneys for ions?!?

BOOK REVIEW- Another Life by K.L. Shandwick

Another Life

Another Life by K.L. Shandwick

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I’m going to crank out a review before I get distracted with the chaos that is my life.

Usually if a book didn’t tickle my fancy I skip providing a star rating as to not negatively impact the book’s average. Most times I chalk my dissatisfaction with a book to my own personal preferences or experiences. Today however, I felt this book earned it’s 3-star rating. Why?

First, the book was obnoxiously repetitive. Cole repeats himself throughout the entire book. Every epiphany and new lesson he masters is the same concept just worded slightly differently. It was tiresome as a reader yet the author would present it as character growth. It was the same awareness of his loss, grief, moving on, etc. While the angst and turmoil in the beginning of the book was strong enough to hook readers the rest of the book didn’t have the same quality of plot.

Secondly, Harper is a mix of bold yet subservient. It gave me whiplash and made her character unbelievable. Sometimes she was hyper aggressive in her sexual demands with Cole. For example, in one conversation she makes a crass statement about “fucking”. Yet that dominance didn’t come through in other aspects of her life. She seemed absolutely satisfied to continually mention Cole’s first wife. While certainly they needed to come to some understanding in the beginning of their relationship it was highly inappropriate to mention her all.the.time…especially during her wedding vows. That’s YOUR day, Harper!

Lastly, (well, not lastly but I don’t need to butcher this book to death) when Cole and Harper decide to pursue a relationship it’s mentioned they love each other…yet Cole’s first conversation is to learn about Harper’s life. She’s such a stranger to him that he has to inquire about where she grew up, her parents, how many siblings, etc. Based on the information provided to me as the reader their attraction was lustful but not based on meaningful conversation, mutual interests, or awareness of each other’s needs/wants.

My dearest book buddies, please know that I hate to bash books. The author has taken time, their creative energy, and invested part of themselves to bring the project to completion. I respect their craft and admire their tenacity to see the project to fruition. (Something I have yet to do!) However, I want people that follow my reviews to see my honest opinion. If I gave every book a 5-star rating that just wouldn’t be accurate or fair.

book review- written with you by aly martinez

Written with You (The Regret Duet, #2)

Written with You by Aly Martinez

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Boy, oh boy…what an ending! A more accurate reaction would be “Boy, oh boy! What a series!”. I’m not quite sure how I stumbled upon this literary gold. Perhaps it was during one of my browsing sessions on “kindle store recommendations”. Whatever it was that brought me to being a lucky reader, I’m forever grateful.

For those of you considering this series (which you definitely should!) be sure to start with Written with Regret! You would rob yourself of some fantastic reading by jumping straight to this one.

Written with You picks up right where the previous book and mind-blowing cliff hanger left off. It’s true what they say…it’s a cruel, cruel world out there. I finished the first book in this series and had to wait 5 days until this book was released. 5 WHOLE DAYS of suffering. Luckily, when the book was delivered to my kindle i was able to wrap myself into the story of Hadley, Rosalee, Caven (gorgeous, perfect Caven), and Willow. The dynamics between the characters, the pacing, and foreshadowing lured me in and kept me captive. Perhaps it’s the sign of true talent (or my dark heart) but I’m completely satisfied with the tragic events that unfolded. There is so much more that I want to say but I’m stumbling over the words in my head, afraid that I’ll unintentionally spoil parts of the book.

Bottom line, this is an author I am going to be following. If her other work is as creative and intriguing I’ll most likely start a fan club and establish myself as president.

Happy reading book buddies!

BOOK REVIEW- WRITTEN WITH REGRET BY ALY MARTINEZ

Written with Regret (The Regret Duet, #1)

Written with Regret by Aly Martinez

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was my first introduction to Aly’s work… and what a splendid encounter it was! Equal parts tragic, lusty, and adorable. First and foremost I want to mention how well crafted the characters were. Multidimensional and genuine. (Is it fair to label fictional characters as genuine?) I found myself intrigued and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. From boiling rage and turmoil, heartache, excitement, amusement, and steam. This story took me everywhere I wanted to go as a reader.

Fantastic story- highly recommend to all you book buddies out there!

BOOK REVIEW- ELEANOR & GREY BY BRITTAINY C. CHERRY

Eleanor & Grey

Eleanor & Grey by Brittainy C. Cherry

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Eleanor & Grey is a story that spans almost 2 decades. The first half is set when Eleanor and Grey are in high school. Grey’s grandfather has recently passed from cancer. He’s the popular boy who’s surrounded by people but desperately lonely. Eleanor’s mother is also battling cancer. This half of the book is absolutely beautiful. Two sad souls finding peace and strength in each other. I loved the juxtaposition of their youth side-by-side with the maturity and gorgeous love they have for each other. Endearing and heartbreaking…I soaked up every word and praised the “Kindle Unlimited” gods for sending me this book.

The second half revisits these characters 17 years later. Truth be told I finished the book a day ago and am just now writing my review. My thoughts were all over the page and I wanted to give you lovely book friends an accurate review. I’m sorry to share that when the story re-introduces Eleanor and Grey…two characters you’ll be enchanted with from the first half…they don’t even resemble the people they once were. Don’t get me wrong, the second half of the story has beauty, moments of sorrow, triumph, and humor. It just seemed like a different book, featuring different characters.

The author is obviously very talented. She wove a story that not only spanned almost 2 decades, but a variety of emotions, settings, and issues. I kept hoping to see more redemption, perhaps more of the characters they resembled in their youth. In an effort not to give away spoilers I’ll just say I think Eleanor deserved more prominence and instead feel like the book ended with her in more of a supporting role.

BOOK REVIEW- UNEXPECTED GIFT BY R.S. LIVELY

Unexpected Gift

Unexpected Gift by R.S. Lively

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Whew- this book took me on a roller coaster ride that I’m not quite sure I enjoyed.

From the description I would assume most readers go into the story knowing there are going to be certain dark elements and sadness. The first 30% of the story the sense of loss and melancholy is almost palatable. The author does a fantastic job of walking the reader through the almost insurmountable pain they are experiencing. Brilliant writing! As a reader I was hooked but also ready to move on from the pain and watch the characters grow within themselves and lean on each other.

What I got instead was two adult “children” who bickered, slut shamed, and then had sex with each other. The author didn’t craft a path for growth or redemption. I’m at a loss…

BOOK REVIEW- FOR LILA, FOREVER BY WINTER RENSHAW

For Lila, Forever

For Lila, Forever by Winter Renshaw

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Book friends- For Lila, Forever has earned a 5-star glowing review from me! I knew I’d be posting a gushing review when I woke up at 4am, unable to sleep until I finished the story. If you are prone to manic book reading sessions take note! Perhaps dive into this book over a long weekend when you can supplement your sleep loss with naps? Just a suggestion. 😉 Now let me detail why this book had me so excited.

The setting for this story (or at least the most pivotal moments) is an private island called Rose Crossing. The author does a fantastic job describing the gorgeous, yet desolate island for readers. The story would not be plausible without the island being crafted or introduced in a very specific manner. For example, the island is accessible by boat but only at certain times of the week and under the supervision of the island’s controlling owner and/or his loyal staff. It also has extremely limited cell service, cable, internet, etc. This means that although the residents and guests of Rose Crossing are enjoying luxurious accommodations they are (for all intents and purposes) at the mercy of the island’s owner…who just so happens to be an maniacal and calculating man.

ATTENTION LADIES- I’m going to introduce you to your next book boyfriend! Thayer Ainsworth is everything beautiful in this world. Even as a young child his family admires his amiable and relaxed manner. He has a soft heart that welcomes others and is slow to judge. His loyalty even in the most difficult times- is unwavering and relentless. Swoon! Lest not you worry! The outside is just as gorgeous as the inside! At one point in the story Thayer is enlikened to a Greek god. Tall, dark, and handsome….oh, and he’s also set to inherit millions of dollars and a private island. Yes, please!

After reading that description I’m sure you’re wondering what lucky lady could possibly be worthy of such a man… Lila Hillard arrives at Rose Crossing to work alongside her grandparents after her mother suddenly passes away. She’s blonde with long legs and carries a negative outlook on life. Lila is constantly waiting for the proverbial other shoe to fall. Even though life has handed her a rough start she’s a hard worker, smart, and shows moments of strength. While I will share there were missed opportunities for her to rise above her circumstances I don’t want that to overshadow your reaction to the story.

I’m worried to go further into the plot and characters without giving away spoilers. Rest assured there’s equal parts of cute romance, frustration and angst, anger towards the wicked, and hope for the characters to overcome all that they’ve lost. I loved this story and hope you do also!

Happy reading book buddies!

BOOK REVIEW- KINGS OF MAYHEM BY PENNY DEE

Kings of Mayhem (Kings of Mayhem MC, #1)

Kings of Mayhem by Penny Dee

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fan-fucking-tasting! This was a good ‘ole fashion MC romance with all the debauchery and angst you could hope for. Cade was a true blue, bad boy with a heart of gold and wrapped in a gorgeous tattooed body. Indy was a strong, intelligent MC Princess who just so happens to be a medical professional. She’s been gutted by love in the past and has guarded her heart well over the past 12 years. What happens after her father passes away challenged her in so many aspects of her life. Loved the characters, loved the steamy scenes, and loooooooved the angsty love/lust… borderline obsession. Fantastic!

book review- fantasy lover by sherrilyn kenyon

Fantasy Lover (Dark-Hunterverse #1)

Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Before I share my review let me just gush over this book’s rating! Almost 80,000 people have reviewed this book with an average 4.17 rating. INSANE! Every author’s dream come true!

And now for the review portion of my comments. Grace Alexander is a sex therapist, who’s parents tragically passed away a few years ago. There is no mention of siblings and she continues to live in her parent’s home so I’ll surmise that she’s an only child. Her best friend Selena (former college roomie) is a Tarot card reader, eccentric, and extremely supportive of Grace. As a reader you’d led to believe Grace is 5’2″, brown hair, curvy (but with smallish breasts), and of average beauty. Julian (I’ll introduce him in a minute) convinces Grace of an inner beauty and to embrace/celebrate her body and curves. Grace is haunted by the insensitive way she lost her virginity at the hands of a cruel boy.

NOW….please allow me to introduce Julian of Macedon. He’s otherworldy perfection… literally. The son of Aphrodite and a Spartan leader. Julian is such a beautiful character I’m not sure what to mention first. Is it his absolute beautiful face and body? Is it his athletic prowess and instincts? Is it his unfathomable ability to pleasure a woman? Is it his wounded heart that endears you so utterly that you can’t stop reading the book? I’ll let you decide. Needless to say he makes for a very interesting character.

POTENTIAL UNPOPULAR OPINION AHEAD!
If you follow my reviews you know what a sucker I am for alpha males. While Julian has some of the alpha traits he’s completely at the mercy of the curse and Grace (or whomever calls for him). You see, Julian was cursed 2,000 years ago and is forced to perform at the (sexual) whims of the woman who beckons him. So for all of his strength, intelligence, and compassion he’s also a “weaker” character. For those of you who love a strong, take-control type female then this is the book for you. Personally I enjoy stories where the male has more control and provides for the female characters. Take what you will with my comments. I’m not offended if you don’t agree with me. Personal preference will be different for everyone.
