BOOK REVIEW- Tangled by Emma Chase

Tangled (Tangled, #1)Tangled by Emma Chase
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Why did it take me so long to dive into this book?!? Tangled has patiently waited on my “Want to Read” list for several months. Time and time again I passed over it and now I’m asking myself “why”?!

As the first exclusively male POV book that I’ve read, it could have turned me off to similar books in the future. Alas, my worries were unfounded. I loved following the story from Drew Evan’s perspective. Emma Chase crafted a character that was humorous, honest, arrogant, compassionate, competitive and sexy. What I wouldn’t pay to grab a beer or sit across a conference table with this character! Drew Evans is a highly successful professional working for his father’s company. He puts the “man” in manwhore but his cheeky comments and brutal honesty allowed me to still root him on throughout the story.

Katherine “Kate” Brooks was a ball buster. There’s no better way to describe her behavior. She’s smart, aggressive and hard working. She’s also loyal which is the only way I can wrap my head around her long term LOSER boyfriend whom I’ll lovingly refer to as a douche canoe.

Thanks to Drew’s incessant and hilarious inner dialogue the book is an enjoyable read.

BOOK REVIEW- My Guardian by Alanea Alder

My Guardian (Bewitched and Bewildered #6)My Guardian by Alanea Alder
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you ever needed proof that life isn’t fair- remind yourself that Aiden McKenzie is NOT your mate. Take a few seconds to let that depressing thought sink in…

Book 6 of the Bewitched and Bewildered series featured several of our beloved characters from previous installments while adding in a few new characters to keep things interesting.

If you’re reading this review I’m assuming you’ve been following the series and are familiar with the main players.
Aiden McKenzie- Bear shifter, commander and overall bada$$ who’s mated to quirky Meryn.
Meryn- Nerdlette who hit the mate lottery with Aiden McKenzie, zero fashion sense with an obsession for technology and Facebook farming games.
Elizabeth “Beth”- Clutzy (perhaps due to a curse) yet organized and beautiful…when not in motion
Gavriel- Old, powerful and incredibly handsome vampire

NEW PLAYERS:
Adriel Aristaios- Unit leader of Noctem Falls (Vampire city), Clipboard manic, yoga and health nut
Eva Mae Miller- Tiger shifter who runs a cowboy bar, tall and gorgeous

You’ll notice I’ve awarded this installment 5 out of 5 stars. The rating is based on the continuation of the character and plot development that’s been building since book 1. Unlike the previous stories this book takes places in the vampire city called Noctem Falls. I enjoyed discovering this new setting and learning more about the paranormal culture that Alanea Alder has created. With that being said I do want to mention that there were parts of this story that I didn’t enjoy.

It must be said that some of my favorite scenes of the past 5 books have been the unit members’ visits to the human grocery store called “Duck In”. Because this story takes place in a different city readers missed out on the hilarity and enrichment those visits previously had contributed.

Also, I felt the featured hero and heroine were lacking in chemistry and charisma. One might assume that as the unit commander for the vampire city Adriel would be imposing and the epitome of alpha male. Instead, what I found was a granola eating, yogi who is inept at politics and managing his unit. How could he have garnered such a prestigious position and yet be so obtuse with how his actions were being portrayed by the units under his command?

Eva Mae Miller’s character was too imposing and “larger than life” to jive with the other females thus far. I was also uncomfortable when she (in tiger form) slept with Meryn and licked her all over. Seems like the actions of a besotted mate instead of a protective mama tigress.

I’m anxiously awaiting the next installment to this series.

BOOK REVIEW- Real by Katy Evans

Real (Real, #1)Real by Katy Evans
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Real by Katy Evans was a “REAL”ly intense book but before I get into the nitty gritty of the story I’d like to applaud Katy Evans for creating the most handsome man in book existence. Remington Tate is my new fantasy “boyfriend body”. Plus, if I’m being completely honest his name is pretty kicka$$ which earned him more favor in my mind.

Now, I hope you’ve noticed that I said he was my favorite boyfriend-appearance wise. Notice I’ve not mentioned his personality or mental faculties. This is where the intensity of the book made me extremely uncomfortable. MAJOR SPOILER ALERTS COMING UP! Remington Tate is bipolar with extreme manic episodes that most often result in violent behavior and property damage. Fellas- in this day and age I’m happy to say that mental health is becoming a larger topic of discussion. As someone who was personally victimized by someone with mental illness (former best friend is a sociopath)- let me assure you firsthand that it’s no walk in the park. Bipolar disorder and aggressive tendencies should be taken extremely seriously. It’s not merely something to be swept under the rug or to be perceived as adding mystery or intrigue. Especially when the person diagnosed has declined professional help or medication.

While I applaud Remington’s character for (finally) being honest with his partner regarding his diagnosis I still felt they were dancing on the ledge of danger and therefore I was unable to completely submerse myself in the book. Perhaps I have too much real-life experience (aka baggage) to truly enjoy the book without cringing every time Remington had a violent episode. Make no mistake, bipolar disorder isn’t a death sentence but I felt that the characters could have taken a more proactive approach to treatment options.

And now I’ll step off my soap box and proceed with my day.

BOOK REVIEW- Untouched by Alexa Riley

UntouchedUntouched by Alexa Riley
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Wha… What the hell just happened?!? Imagine this- you purchase some land to build an airstrip on. Upon visiting the land you see a “castle-like” building and notice movement inside. How do you react? Bust inside, find a fair maiden, race her upstairs and bang the ever-loving-$hit out of her repeatedly while using dirty talk.

If Alexander is doing it right, then I’ve been doing it wrong my entire life. Let’s be honest I’m a huge fan of this genre and dirty talk speaks directly to my soul. However this story was beyond preposterous and I couldn’t buy into the outlandish characters.

BOOK REVIEW- Kiss and Kin by Kinsey W. Holley

Kiss and Kin (Werewolves in Love, #1)Kiss and Kin by Kinsey W. Holley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Well, well, well, look what the werewolf dragged in… a quirky little romance novel for me to enjoy!

ABOUT:
Taran is an alpha shifter who’s gorgeous with a reputation as a love ’em and leave ’em type. He’s also a detective for Houston’s Shifter Investigation Unit.

Lark Manning is described as a court reporter but her career is never discussed more than as a passing comment. She seems neither passionate about it nor does it affect the plot what-so-ever. That little tid bit seemed as useful to know as her high school english test score.

Both individuals love each other but are too timid to make their feelings known. Taran’s concerns stem (mostly) from the reaction from their extended family. Although they aren’t blood relatives growing up they considered themselves cousins.

Loved the premise, enjoyed several scenes of the book but feel the author could have built in a few early chapters for more character development and turmoil. For example- perhaps a chapter from Lark’s perspective watching Taran date other women when she was younger? They characters are described as struggling with (what they perceive are) unrequited love. Alas, in “as-is” condition I’ve awarded it 4 out of 5 stars. Definitely an enjoyable, quick read but would have loved a bit more conflict to make it interesting.

BOOK REVIEW- The Gargoyle Gets His Girl by Kristen Painter

The Gargoyle Gets His Girl (Nocturne Falls, #3)The Gargoyle Gets His Girl by Kristen Painter
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Nocturne Falls series has quickly become my favorite guilty reading pleasure. The books are quirky and fun, a light read that’s guaranteed to put a smile on my face.

Even the location itself screams (pun intended) of adventure and fun. What a great idea for the series! If only Nocturne Falls existed in real life!

Having never read a gargoyle book and unfamiliar to their folklore I applaud Kristen on the character she created. Nick Hardwin was the epitome of protective, solid and dependable- all characteristics one would also attribute to a gargoyle. Fae jeweler Willa was sweet and I loved her confidence with her body and sexual prowess. I can’t tell you how many times I roll my eyes at the prude or inexperienced female characters that some authors create. How some would perceive timid, inexperience as more attractive than a confident temptress is beyond my comprehension.

3 Cheers for this installment in the series.

BOOK REVIEW- Three Wishes by Kristen Ashley

Three WishesThree Wishes by Kristen Ashley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars for Kristen Ashley’s Three Wishes. What’s holding it back from being worthy of the coveted 5 stars? Let’s just say I cringed at the cliche description of Fazire the genie.

“The shape was a fat, jolly-looking man, wearing a grape-coloured fez with a little, turquoise tassel on the top. He had a bizarre outfit of turquoise and grape with an embroidered grape bolero vest and billowy turquoise trousers. The trousers ended in purple shoes that had little curls at the pointed toes. He had long gold bands affixed to his wrists that went up his forearms heavily and were embedded with blue and purple jewels and thick, gold hoops dangled from his ears. He had a shock of jet black hair and a jet black goatee pointed arrogantly from his chin.”

COME ON! Kristen Ashley is one of my top 3 favorite authors. Her Fantasyland series Wildest Dreams is nothing short of perfection! So needless to say I was disappointed at what I perceived to be a cop-out character. Blargh! Certainly Kristen with her infinite talent and creativity could have crafted a genie character that wouldn’t read like a low-rent children’s book.

Alas, I’ll continue to sing Kristen’s praises and recommend others to discover the fantastic worlds she creates in her books.

BOOK REVIEW- Lick by Kylie Scott

Lick (Stage Dive, #1)Lick by Kylie Scott
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was in the mood for a good ole’ fashioned, down & dirty rocker romance. Sadly, “Lick” didn’t meet my expectations which is disappointing especially with a super sexy title like “Lick”. That word alone held empty promises of naughty rocker debauchery.

Perhaps I’m jaded but this book fell short of my expectations.
Characters- meh
(Evelyn Thomas celebrates her 21st birthday in Vegas and slips a condom in her bra- hoping for some sexcapades. Yet throughout the book she displays an innocence that at the very least is unbelievable.)

Plot- meh
(In an effort to avoid spoilers I’ll just say that there was only one scene that had me on the edge of my seat like a sadist chanting YES, YES, YES when there was some turmoil. That scene alone increased my rating from 3 to 4 stars.)

BOOK REVIEW- Dusty by Mary Elizabeth and Sarah Elizabeth

Dusty (Dusty, #1)Dusty by YellowBella
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Simply put…I think it would have been easier to rip my heart out and rub it against a cheese grater for a few hours. This book takes torturous romance to the next level AND I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!

I’m adding this book to my all time favorite angst-riddled romance novels. It joins The Story of Us and Complicate Me. Those books have the power to seize you by the gonads until you’re on your knees begging the author for compassion.

Thomas AKA Dusty is damaged with a capital D. A character with a potent cocktail of handsome, cocky, selfish and destructive. His perception of love is completely warped and he chooses to envelope those around with his misery. Leighlee Bliss is a product of overbearing parents and a naivety that borders on willful ignorance. Together they bastardize the love they share and seem to relish in the continual torment of their relationship.

Proceed with caution my fellow librocubicularists!

BOOK REVIEW- Trouble by Samantha Towle

TroubleTrouble by Samantha Towle
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Samantha Towle- author of my all-time FAVORITE series The Mighty Storm has once again given me a lust-worthy book boyfriend. Jordan Matthews is gorgeous and he knows it. Let me tell you folks, there are far worse things in life than a cocky alpha male.

Mia Monroe, Mia Monroe…what a sorrowful childhood you’ve been given. In Fifty Shades of Grey the male protagonist describes himself as “5o shades of fucked up”…if that was the case poor Mia Monroe is probably 5,000 shades of fucked up. Referring to some of her memories as cringe-worthy doesn’t seem to do them justice. The fact that she’s a semi-functioning adult is a nod to the resiliency of the human spirit. I’m usually the sadistic SOB chanting for authors to add more angst and turmoil in their plot lines. In this case I feel like handing Samantha Towle a voodoo doll and a margarita so she can channel some of her angst away from poor Mia.

This was the perfect, angst-riddled literary nugget to sink my teeth into this summer. I encourage you to do the same. Happy reading my fellow book lovers!
