BOOK REVIEW- Vampire Girl by Karpov Kinrade

Vampire GirlVampire Girl by Karpov Kinrade
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Quick! What’s the 3 words- when combined- that promise unbridled joy and the deepest desires of my heart?!? If you guess anything other than “twilight meets outlander” you clearly don’t know me and I’m questioning the future of our book-friendship.

So let’s just say when I stumbled upon this story and after reading the description I wiped my social calendar (feed and bath my toddlers) so that I could invest my time where it really matters…reading this book.

Mere hours later and I’m basking in the glow of my post book glutinous consumption. While I’m still unsure where the outlander analogy came to fruition it was still a solid nugget of vampire awesomeness.

Pros- sexy vampires (need I say more???)

Cons- no one had sex (and described it in exact details for me to enjoy) with the sexy vampires. Look people, I sacrifice myself day in and day out to take care of bratty toddlers! Is it too much to ask for one measly sex scene to alleviate the monotony of my days?!? I didn’t think so! Let’s work on that for the next book shall we???

BOOK REVIEW- Heart-Shaped Hack by Tracey Garvis-Graves

Heart-Shaped Hack (Kate and Ian, #1)Heart-Shaped Hack by Tracey Garvis-Graves
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What an unexpected gem! Tracey Garvis-Graves puts a refreshing spin on this “beauty meets brains” love story.

I first fell in love with Tracey’s writing with her book “On the Island”. (If you haven’t had the pleasure be sure to check it out!) Admittedly the cover art for the book was a tad misleading and reminiscent of “Dealthless & Divided” which is a mobster romance by Bethany-Kris. Having recently finished a fore mentioned story I had a bundle of expectations going into this story. But, what did I discover once I cracked the cover? I never thought you’d ask!

Kate Watts (the “beauty” in our beauty & brains combo) has a heart of gold. After saying goodbye to her law career she operates a struggling food pantry. Insert the “brains” of our story…Ian (no last name) comes to her rescue in the form of semi-annoymous donations that manage to keep the food pantry in operation and the needy from going hungry.

What should you expect?
*Witty banter from our “geek chic” hero Ian (no last name)
*No less than 1 billion references to Victoria’s Secret (minor exaggeration but I did wonder if they had a hand in advertising or if the author was hoping for some freebies???)
*What I’ve lovingly refer to as “vanilla” sex scenes that actually might be categorized as sweet. Don’t get me wrong. You still wouldn’t want to read these scenes in front of your parents but they shouldn’t make you blush if you’re a grown adult that’s been in a consenting relationship before.
*A lighthearted, quick read. Perhaps bring this book to enjoy on your next beach vacation?

BOOK REVIEW- When You’re Ready by J.L. Berg

When You're Ready (Ready, #1)When You’re Ready by J.L. Berg
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Where are my over 30, chocolate loving book ladies at?!? This is the book for you! Although our leading lady is actually in her late 20’s the topics and emotions in this book speak to a slightly older audience.

Biggest selling point of this book? Just take a gander at the description of the male love interest… “Yes, I’ll admit, he’s goddamn gorgeous. He’s like the Ian Somerhalder of doctors.” SWOON!!!! What a panty-dropping combination…the steamy good looks of Ian Somerhalder (if you don’t know who he is do a brief google search and be prepared for your sex organs to immediately burst in flames) mixed with a toned doctor in scrubs?!? Ummm… I think it will be a solid week until my libido is back at regular levels just thinking about this character. 😉

But…enough about me! You’re wondering what this book is all about! Allow me to give you a brief overview. Clare is a gorgeous, curly red-headed widow with an amazing body thanks to yoga who has an obsession for all things sweet and chocolatey. Her daughter Maddie is adorable, obsessed with all things ballerina and displays all the endearing, unrealistic traits of a 4 year old with none of the hair-pulling out realities that actual parents have to contend with. (Cliche adorable kid who makes all the other characters fall in love with them. Am I the ONLY parent who would appreciate a more realistic young child character?!?) Logan Matthews is the walking sex beast, doctor extraordinaire with a billionaire father (major daddy issues) and commitment/love issues.

This book was a pleasant read, a few parts caused my eyes to water but the subject matter wasn’t too heavy or depressing. Pretty predictable (ok, really, really, really predictable) but it’s standard for this type of chick-lit romance. Recipe for a chick-lit, over 30 romance= attractive male with minor issues that are easily overcome + damaged female with lots of love to give + adorable kid + mention sweets & chocolates repeatedly + “vanilla” sex scenes with at least 1 mention of “making love” + happy ending

BOOK REVIEW- An Obsession with Vengeance by Nancy Haviland

An Obsession with Vengeance (Wanted Men, #3)An Obsession with Vengeance by Nancy Haviland
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Ahhh Maksim, my silver-eyed lover. I was wondering how far in the series it would take to get to your romance. And here it is! 3rd book of the series and I was ready to discover his secrets.

With the perfect combination of nerdy computer hacker, tattooed bad boy and mysterious club owner I was optimistic about Maksim’s story. From a tortured childhood and absent parents this guy had more demons in his past than the other “Wanted Men” thus far. Combine that with Sydney Martin’s secretive and defensive personality I was eager to read their story. Sadly, I kept finding my mind wandering and had to re-read several pages because it wasn’t capturing my attention as the previous books had. SPOILER ALERT- At first, Sydney’s reluctance to tell Maksim about her son made sense. But as the threats got worse her son NOT her secrets should have been her top priority. After an “explosive” threat she sends her son off with an unsuspecting family unaware of the grave danger that was lurking. How is that plausible?!? While she hid in a safe house her son was virtually unprotected.

Alas, Nancy Haviland wrapped up the story with a beautiful bow and I’m satisfied with the ending. So far there are no other books in the series but if Nancy decides to bless us with more “Wanted Men” I hope that there will be less predictable conflict and fresh characters to keep the story interesting.

BOOK REVIEW- Deathless & Divided by Bethany-Kris

Deathless & Divided (The Chicago War, #1)Deathless & Divided by Bethany-Kris
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I admit I’m sicker than a dog and am hopped up on DayQuil and Sudaffed. Bear that in mind in the event this review turns into the ramblings of a deranged housewife.

First, I’d like to thank the heavens above for mobster romances. Such a sexy mix of sin and pleasure. My first introduction to this genre was Cora Reilly’s “Bound by” series. (If you haven’t read that series stop everything and read those books! I’m serious. Just do it.) Quickly followed that fantastic series with Bethany-Kris’ “The Arrangement”. It was a steamy book but a little too much sex to be believable and not enough content for my liking. (Yes, check outside your windows! I just said that a book had too much sex! Certainly pigs are flying!) J.M. Darhower’s “Monster in his Eyes” certainly falls in this category but left me with mixed feelings as did Tijans Books’ “Carter Reed”. Belle Aurora’s “Lev” falls somewhere in between.

Now that you’ve survived my listing of mobster romances let me assure you that “Deathless & Divided” was one of my favorites. Why? Well, the dirty talk and sex scenes certainly didn’t shy away from anything. But above that the author did a great job showcasing the nitty gritty of mob life whereas other series have painted it with rose colored glasses. There was lots of blood, senseless killings, vendettas and characters posturing for more leadership & power. The character’s reactions (for the most part) were reasonable and I could sympathize with their struggles.

BOOK REVIEW- Original Sin by Samantha Towle

Original Sin (Alexandra Jones, #2)Original Sin by Samantha Towle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wait…what the what??? Why do I feel like Samantha just boned me in the toot-chute? (And not in the fun way! I feel like she whispered sexy promises in my ear, led me into a dark corner and then stuck it to me.) Just finished this book and scrambled to download the 3rd and final book of the series to enjoy on my long airplane flight. Guess what?!? 4 years after this book was released she still hasn’t written it!!! I may or may not have shed an angsty tear and shook my fist at the sky. Darn you Samantha! Ps. I still love you and will continue to read anything and everything you write.

BOOK REVIEW- Jake Undone by Penelope Ward

Jake Undone (Jake, #1)Jake Undone by Penelope Ward
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Confession- I read “my skylar” prior to this book so I already had a good idea where the story (and characters) were heading as I dived in. This was another fun story by Penelope Ward and very in-line with her other novels. Equal parts sexy, angst, romance and cheeky characters. My feelings for Penelope’s writing can best be en-likened to the popular phrase from the movie Field of Dreams “if you build it they will come”. If Penelope Ward writes it I WILL read it.

BOOK REVIEW- My Skylar by Penelope Ward

My SkylarMy Skylar by Penelope Ward
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Are you planning to give him your first kiss?”
“Probably”
The jealousy that nearly made me insane earlier returned in full force.
“You can’t do that.”
“Why?”
My heart pounding in anticipation of what I was about to do. “Because I’m stealing it.”

All hail Penelope Ward! This book gave me an “angst-gasm”! (Yes, I just invented that term but once you read this book you’ll agree it was completely necessary and appropriate to use in this review.) I’m on the way to the airport so I’m unable to fully craft the review this book deserves. Rest assured this story will take you on a sexy roller coaster of emotions and you’ll love every minute of it.

BOOK REVIEW- The Glittering Court by Richelle Mead

The Glittering Court (The Glittering Court, #1)The Glittering Court by Richelle Mead
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Traveling to wild lands, rival & catty girls, whirlwind (and competitive) courtships…. oh my! What a recipe for a fantastic story ESPECIALLY when it’s written by one of my favorite authors! Last night the book was delivered to my kindle at 11pm. I thought the heavens had opened and were (figuratively) showering me with manna!!! Then…um about 2% into the book I had a hard time buying our heroine’s plight. Yes, I get it that her noble family was financially struggling and she was promised to an itchy guy with overbearing grandma issues. But to abandon your OWN grandmother and head off into a wild, uncharted territory with no promise of finding a better match? That didn’t jive with me. (Honestly folks! Our supposedly intelligent leading lady has NO guarantee that she’ll find a husband of quality-in any estimate- yet she ventures off into the unknown? Not plausible) Either Richelle needed to do a better job of convincing me that an itchy husband is absolutely dreadful or she needed to make me think that there was a guaranteed “pay-out” by making such a rash decision.

Spoiler Alerts- You’ve been warned.

If you enjoyed Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women” you’ll love this book. As for me? I’ve always been incredulous at Meg’s decision to skip out on handsome, rich, kind Laurie and shackling herself for a lifetime of financial and social struggles with John Brooke. Make as many inferences as you will from my statements as to Adelaide’s romantic selection. 😉

BOOK REVIEW- RoomHate by Penelope Ward

RoomHateRoomHate by Penelope Ward
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

RoomHate- Ding, Ding, Ding! This book wins the award for most inaccurate title. Potential Spoiler Alert…Approx 10% of the way into the book the roomates no longer hate each other. Further in the novel they actually state that they never hated each other. So…hmmm. Yep, one could accurately conclude that the title is misleading.

Now that I’ve gotten my grievances regarding the book title off my chest let me sing this story’s praises.
First up, I’d also like to applaud Penelope Ward for creating a “rival” love interest (Jade) who is gorgeous, sexy and skinny and still NICE! Yep, no girl-on-girl cut downs or the clique skinny girl MUST be a bitch. How refreshing!
Secondly, sex scenes (while few and far between) were hot without pushing the envelope for shock value.
Thirdly, Another potential spoiler alert…Penelope did a great job of describing life with a newborn and no help. As a new mom myself I can attest to the lack of sleep and showers being something of distant memory, etc.
